Out & About
Things to do in the local area
Having the choice to do as much or as little as you wish must be the essence of a good holiday. Here are some of Mull's options for the days you feel active. We operate Turus Mara and so must begin with taking a trip to Staffa & The Treshnish Isles and/or Staffa & Iona. The latter saves you 3 hours driving and road rage in getting to Iona. Climb the last Island Munro - all 3170 feet of it! Chill out on the white sands of Calgary. Take a Wildlife watching trip for your best chance of viewing otters, sea eagles and the huge variety of fauna for which Mull is famous.
Go pony trecking, whale searching, loch fishing. Spoil a good walk with a round of golf on either of two courses with settings and panoramic views to blow away any bunkering frustrations.
Take the train! to Torosay Castle and gardens, visit Duart Castle, the ancient Clan seat of the MacLeans of Mull. Visit the Bird of Prey Centre near Craignure.
Commune with furry creatures at the children's farm, indulge yourselves at the chocolate factory, see a past Mull at the museum, enjoy the latest exhibition at An Tobar Arts Centre or maybe catch a concert. The entertainment can vary from small informal local artiste ceilidhs to full blown world class stars like Martin Taylor, Tommy Smith, or huge names from the traditional music genre such as Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain. Visit the distillery, try a wee sample....... Enjoy a selection of locally sourced real food, e.g. shellfish, local beef, lamb or pork at one of the many eating establishments.
Explore the coast (we've got 300 miles, - 480km. of it) much of it wild, rugged, full of surprises, keep an eye to the ocean for many different seabird species and the occasional fin - porpoises, sharks, sunfish, dolphins, whales, including orca are seen from time to time. A far travelled leatherback turtle (they wander as far North as the Arctic Circle) paid us a visit in 2004!
Mull is a Mecca for geologists with a great variety of formations from different eras in the formation of the planet. Fascinated by archeology and history? we have duns, brochs, forts, standing stones, scores of ruined villages, each with a story to tell.
Finally, myths about constant rain and wind in the West should be discarded! For Example, during the Summer of 2007 when parts of the UK were being flooded, here in the Islands to the North and West of Scotland, we had near drought conditions until July when a little bracing dampness improved conditions. You can, and do, get sunburnt on Mull, but bring the wellies anyway!
